February 2020

The team had three missions: medical, dental and community development.  Many patients were seen for chronic and acute problems and for special needs, both in the clinic and on house calls.  The pharmacy and equipment were inventoried and a system was developed for more consistent and efficient supply. An education session on the difference between bacterial and viral infections and how to treat them was held in the Education Center as part of the continuing Taking Care of Moms initiative.  Patients were also taught mindfulness techniques to help treat anxiety and stress without medication. Many dental patients were seen in the clinic and four schools were visited, resulting in the treatment of 147 children!  The Honduran dentist was trained in newer cavity prevention and treatment techniques.

Education sessions were conducted with the Hope and Faith Women’s Kitchen Garden Cooperative and raised beds were constructed at the COOP garden.  Seeds were distributed.  A meeting was held in San Pedro Sula with CEPUDO, an NGO partner of Food for the Poor, and food and supplies were obtained from their warehouse, including 250-gallon liquid soap tanks which will be repurposed as rainwater collection systems.  The patient latrine at the clinic was cleaned and a changing table for infants was constructed alongside it, complete with a water source for washing.
