May – June, 2014
In June 2014, water and electricity both came to Carrizalito for the first time. A six-person ACTS/Engineers Without Borders team spent two weeks working with the community to construct Phase 2 (of three planned phases) to build a complete water system for the village.
On this trip, 12 utility poles were installed to bring electricity two miles from the nearest road to the village water source (a natural groundwater spring). The team installed a pump and control system in the previously-constructed pump tank, and the community was very happy to see water flowing into their village for the first time ever. No more hauling 40-pound buckets of water up the hill every day.
The team also worked in Los Oreros, laying the foundations for a new pipe bridge. The old, rickety pipe bridge breaks often, leaving the community without water until repairs can be made. The community dug holes, mined sand and gravel from the river, mixed concrete, and assembled the bridge foundations. The rest of the bridge will be completed on the next EWB trip.
