September 2018
The entire Loco Mapa region of Honduras has been stricken with a severe drought during the summer of 2018. This has caused a near total failure of the corn crop which is the primary food source for the subsistence farmers of the area. ATCS is moving quickly to provide financial assistance to the villagers so that they can get their bean crop planted. Without a successful bean crop this fall, wide spread hunger is a very real possibility.
While in Honduras in September, ACTS Steering Committee members Linda Kennedy and Brad Taylor met with FHIA, the Honduran Institute of Agricultural Research. This is a non-profit organization that works with small farms to improve efficiency and promote crop diversity. We are hopeful that FHIA can help find a long-term solution to the agricultural problems in Loco Mapa but funding will be needed to continue this effort.
