March 2024 - Soccer Program

Charlie Miller led a trip designed to enhance the soccer program at the Colegio. This year, soccer has become a popular focus for the kids, and entertainment for the village. It is helpful in attracting students to the school, and has garnered enthusiasm throughout El Rosario and among people in the surrounding communities. Charlie was joined on this trip by two Spanish speaking young soccer players/instructors from Maine, Antonio and Santiago.

While Charlie and the instructors were in El Rosario, over 40 students came from as far away as Los Planos, Tecuan and Ocotal to receive instruction. Teachers and local officials too came to take part in the games and the training. The village pulled together to arrange for an away game to Morazon, some 30 Km from El Rosario.

The ACTS team will return in September with goals, nets, socks, balls, and a variety of other sports equipment to cement the goals of the program. A tournament will take place in El Rosario the first week in September, and will include six of the schools connected to our soccer program. The long-term plan is to create a much bigger soccer league that will include at least 12 villages scattered throughout Locomapa, each of which have the capacity both in terms of student numbers and facilities to participate in the league.
